Empowering Veterans, Transforming Lives: Our Mission to Serve
Welcome to the Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America
The Keystone Paralyzed Veterans of America is one of 33 chartered chapters of the Paralyzed Veterans of America in the United States, founded in 1960.
Many people are surprised to discover that the U.S. government and the Department of Veterans Affairs do not fully meet the needs of all veterans, including those with disabilities. In fact, many of the services currently available were established only after veterans' service organizations, including the PVA, collaborated with Congress and the VA to implement them. We strive daily to enhance these services and address the evolving needs of our members.
The Paralyzed Veterans of America, established in 1946, is a Congressionally chartered veterans’ service organization with specialized knowledge of the unique challenges faced by its members—veterans of the armed services who have sustained spinal cord injuries or dysfunctions. (“Congressionally chartered” indicates that Congress defines our operational guidelines. While the PVA and its chapters receive government funding—supported by your tax dollars—this is only the case if we are contracted to provide specific services. The Keystone chapter does not have any service contracts and relies solely on donations that are not derived from taxes.
What does the PVA do?
The PVA uses this expertise to be the leading advocate for:
Quality health care for its members,
Research and education addressing spinal cord injury and dysfunction,
Benefits available as a result of its members' military service.
Civil rights and opportunities which maximize the independence of its members
The mission of the Keystone PVA is to improve the quality of life of paralyzed veterans by:
Encouraging and supporting spinal cord injury and disease research.
Assisting in the expansion of opportunities in wheelchair sports and recreation.
Improving access to health care and other veterans benefits.
Advocating for the rights of disabled people, including the reduction and elimination of barriers to accessibility and mobility.
Join Us in Making a Difference: Support Keystone PVA’s Mission to Empower Paralyzed Veterans
Keystone PVA is dedicated to serving paralyzed veterans, with leadership provided by veterans themselves. The Board of Directors consists entirely of paralyzed veterans, who advocate for their peers by reaching out to public officials to highlight the needs of paralyzed vets. They also visit veterans in VA medical centers and other facilities to ensure they receive the best care available.
In addition to their advocacy, Keystone PVA encourages veterans to engage in life activities that might have been challenging a generation ago. These efforts are supported by the commitment and involvement of volunteers.
